2008-09 Sac-Joaquin Section IV Runner-Up

FALCONS 2009 WINTER SPORT PLAYOFF PICTURE

Basketball: For the first time in memory both the Christian Brothers Boys and Girls Basketball teams enter the Sac Joaquin Division IV Playoffs as the #1 seed.  Following their back to back, two game sweeps at home in the first two rounds of the playoffs both the Boys and the Girls Varsity traveled to Tokay H.S. in Lodi on Wednesday night where the boys defeated San Juan, while the Girls fell to Linden.  With their semi-final victory the Boys advanced to the San Joaquin Section Division IV Title game at Arco Arena where they were defeated by Modesto Christian H.S.  They then entered the Norcal Playoffs where they were defeated by #1 seed Salesian H.S.  The CB community extends its congratulations to the entire Falcon Basketball program on a great season.

Boys Basketball:  The Christian Brothers Varsity finished the regular season 18-6 overall and 8-4 in the tough Sierra Valley Conference where four of the seven teams will enter the playoffs in two different divisions of play.  CB's successful 10-2 preseason record included a tournament championship at the Rosemount Holiday Tournament.  Back to back wins in their final regular season league games propelled the Falcons up the C.I.F. power ratings to the #1 seed in the San Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs.  In their quest to get to Arco Arena, the Falcons opened up against Hilmar at home and defeated the Yellowjackets 70-51 and then prevailed over Capital Christian 66-59.  The Falcons then drove down to in Lodi on Wednesday, March 4 and raced to a 73-61 win over San Juan.  The win put the Falcons back in the Sac Joaquin Section Division IV Title game at Arco Arena for the first time since 2001.  The Falcons took on the defending champions, and winners of nine consecutive sections crowns, from Modesto Christian on Saturday at Arco Arena.  The Falcons got off to a good start, trailing 21-20 after the first quarter.  The game had the marking of a classic shootout as the Falcons still trailed by one with four minutes left in the half, but the Crusaders put the pedal all the way to the metal and went on a big run to take a 18-point lead at halftime on their way to a 92-63 victory.  As section runner-ups, the Falcons entered the Norcal playoffs and traveled to Salesian High School in Richmond (27-4) the Champions of the North Coast Section.  The Falcons once again were very competitive early against a highly-touted opponent and found themselves down by only four points at halftime despite being the road team.  But Salesian went on a run in the third quarter and the Falcons could never cut into the double digit deficit, eventually ending up on the short end, 65-47.  The Falcons finished the year 21-8, and as the Sac Joaquin Section Division IV runner-ups and one of the last 16 D IV teams in the state playing basketball in March.  Great job Boys!

Girls Basketball:  The Varsity Lady Falcons finished the regular season with a 21-6 overall record while going 10-2 in the powerhouse Sierra Valley Conference, good for a second place finish.  CB's 11-4 preseason record included a championship at the Burbank Winter Hoopfest.  By sweeping every team in their conference except Division II powerhouse Oak Ridge, the Lady Falcons left no doubt that they would enter the San Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs as the #1 seed.  The Lady Falcons began their defense of the Division IV Title by defeating Bret Harte 63-34 and then prevailed over a scrappy Bear River, 57-53 squad at home before falling in the semi-finals to Linden 57-49.  The Falcon's successful season finished at 23-7 overall.  Congratulations Girls!

Wrestling: With their outstanding performances in the Sierra Valley Conference Championship Meet, Ryan Lutz, Dylan Orr, Jason Howard, Jameson Cordeiro, Robin Davis and Andy Scruggs earned their way to the Division II Section Meet, February 20-21, at Del Oro High School.  At that section meet the Falcons had a record-setting performance, scoring a record of 70.5 points and finishing 9th out of the 22 teams competing at the Sac Joaquin Section Division II level!  Of the six CB wrestlers who competed, four placed in the top 6 in their respective weight classes. Senior Ryan Lutz finished 3-0 at 171 pounds and became CB's first ever Division II Section Champ!  Ryan dominated his weight class and in his 3 matches, no wrestler scored an offensive point on him as he capped it all with an 8-2 decision in the title match.  Junior Dylan Orr placed 3rd at 215 pounds and had a record of 5-1 over the two days of competition. Senior Jason Howard placed 5th at 135 pounds and was 4-2 over the weekend.  As a result, Christian Brothers advances a record tying 3 wrestlers to the Sac Joaquin Masters meet Thursday and Friday, February 26-27 at UOP in Stockton.  Jason and Ryan are now 2-time Masters qualifiers, while this was Dylan's first trip to the Masters Tournament. While Jason Howard (0-2), Ryan Lutz (1-2) and Junior Dylan Orr (2-2) all wrestled well at the Masters Tournament but were unable to qualify for State Championship Meet.  However, their fine performances boosted CB to 60th out of 137 teams earning their way to the Masters Tournament, the Falcons best finish at the prestigious event in three years.  Congratulations for a great season guys!

2008 NorCal Volleyball Champions!

The Falcons amazing comeback victory (3-2) over rival Ripon on Tuesday night at home gave them the Northern California Title and sends the Lady Falcons to their second state finals appearance in the last three years.  This year the State Championship series is on the campus of U.C. Irvine where CB will take on the SoCal champs Santa Fe Christian (32-6) of Solano Beach. Go on the road with girls and cheer them on as they seek the State Title in what would be a first for Christian Brothers Volleyball and only the second by any Sacramento area team in any division!

Christian Brothers High School Boy's varsity cross country team recently returned from their third consecutive State Championship Meet.  This group of dedicated and determined boys competed at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Cross Country Championships Meet in Fresno on Saturday, November 29, 2008.  Although they were ranked 10th in the state for Division IV, they made an incredible show at this meet by coming in 5th place against some of the most competitive teams in the state!  The dedication and commitment by coaches Danny Delgado, David Levasseur and Larry Miranda enabled this team to be among the elite group of schools who qualify for this meet.  These committed runners have shown us they what it takes, and although five of the seven boys will be graduating this year, Coach Delgado has a feeling that the CBHS Cross County team has what it takes to make it to the state meet in the future.

EYE ON THE ALUMNI

Calling all alumni! On each of the individual team sites there is a column listing Christian Brothers graduates who have gone on to compete in their sports in the college, semi-pro or professional ranks.  The column lists the player, their year of graduation and where they played after leaving CB.  Christian Brothers High School has a rich and storied athletic history. We know that there are many athletes over the decades who have followed up their high school careers by playing in college and even professionally. We are in the process of building each of these sports team history sites. While we have gathered some information, we need your help to make these lists complete and accurate.  So, if you know of any CB graduate who continued to pursue their athletic dreams in any sport at the next level, email us their information through the "contact us" box below or by sending the information to jvvine@citlink.net    With your help we can proudly display the athletic achievements and tradition that helps make Christian Brothers High School the very special Sacramento institution that it is.  Thank you and GO FALCONS!

Welcome to CBHS Boosters Club and our New Website

The CB Boosters Club would like to extend an invitation for you and your family to become members and active volunteers for the Booster Club. Once fully constructed, here on our new website you will be able to follow the progress of all Christian Brothers athletic teams including game results at all levels, learn about our great coaches, volunteer to work at athletic events, buy Spirit wear and receive team announcements. In addition, above you will find links to the highschoolsportscalendar.net (listing the complete and up to the minute CB sports calendar), as well as the Maxpreps and CIF San Joaquin Section websites. We hope that your son or daughter will be interested in a school sport at Christian Brothers High School as a spectator, super-star or somewhere in between. For all students, lessons are learned on and off the field and we welcome their enthusiasm and your support of that endeavor. The purpose is of the organization is to provide volunteer support for athletic programs, as well as financial support for educational, visual and performing arts, and social programs. Through the generous support of the Booster Club, the money raised in 2007-2008 will benefit all students helping them to become Lasallian ambassadors.

School Spirit. Some of the greatest moments we have to look back on as parents are those of our high school years. Pep-rallies; football games; long team bus rides; the celebration and the tears. Consider the crowd in the bleachers and how important their cheer is to the drive behind all student athletes. What would a sporting event be without a cheering crowd? All these moments eventually bonded us with lifelong friendships and great memories. As parents, we want the same sense of achievement, pride and fellowship for our children.

The tradition continues. The Booster Club relies on volunteers to fulfill its mission of supporting the excellent athletic programs at Christian Brothers High School. While we all take pride in the accomplishments of our many gifted athletes and coaches, the true emphasis of the athletic department is on making high school athletics available to all who wish to participate. The 2006-07 athletic budget of more than $600,000 makes it among the highest in the City, thus making available to all students a much needed outlet for social interaction, leadership development and team building. Each year, Boosters, through its fund raising efforts, is relied on to provide approximately 20% of the athletic budget.

Please help us continue the tradition. If you are a parent of a current CB athlete then you already understand the importance of the Booster Club. For new CB parents, your participation is essential to the continuation of the CB sport program and its many related functions. Whatever your strength or talent, we have a place for you. The Booster Club sponsors the snack shack at home games; sells CBHS Spirit Wear (dress code ready!) available at most home games and special events; traditional events including the Red & Blue Scrimmage in late August and the Spring Sports Bar-B-Que Event. You won’t want to miss any of these experiences, so mark them on your school calendars.

I encourage you to become a member of the Booster Club. A Boosters’ membership quickly pays for itself. The benefits include admission to home athletic events, and the knowledge that you are helping the athletic program that benefits our students in leadership development and team building. You are invited to join us for the Booster Club board meetings which are generally held on the evening of the first Monday of each month. The meetings are open to all parents. Click HERE for a membership application to be completed at your earliest convenience. Please feel free to make a photocopy for any other friends or relatives interested in joining.

If you have any questions, please call.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT

To establish an interscholastic athletic department that enhances the Lasallian educational process of our students. Through participation in athletics, student-athletes will have the opportunity to develop physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. They will recognize the presence of God in oneself and in others during competition. Athletics provide the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him/her to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations in a variety of learning formats. Student-athletes, coaches, and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Lasallian values can be revealed, tested, and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community. Every member of our community seek to encourage, instill , and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

The Director of Athletics leads the sports program, assisted by the Assistant Athletic Director. The entire student body is encouraged to take a genuine interest in the athletic program and contribute to our effort to strive for excellence. Students are expected to manifest a spirit of good sportsmanship and cooperation with officials and with the administration, coaches, faculty members and students from other schools.

As a member of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section, Christian Brothers High School diligently enforces all CIF rules. In addition, the Athletic Department has several policies unique to our mission:

Athletes absent from school are not eligible to participate in either practice or games unless approved by the Dean of Students.

All athletes will travel to games using school-arranged transportation.

All athletes traveling by school-provided transportation must return via school transportation from an event unless the parent has made arrangements with the Athletic Director prior to the event.

Every student wishing to participate in a sport must have a 'Consent and Release Form' turned into the coach.

Student-athletes are responsible for all equipment issued to them. Athletes will be held financially responsible for damaged, lost or stolen equipment.

Student-athletes may participate in off-season programs. Such participation may not be made mandatory.

Student-athletes' participation in club sports while in season at CBHS, will be at the discretion of each head coach.

GO FALCONS!
